Types We Install

Curb & Concrete Types

Each application has a correct curb type. We specify and install the right one for your drainage requirements, traffic loading, and agency specifications.

Standard Vertical Curb

6-inch vertical concrete face. The standard curb type for commercial and residential frontages throughout LA County. Controls drainage and defines the pavement edge against vehicle encroachment.

Caltrans Type A

Rolled (Mountable) Curb

Gradual slope profile that allows vehicles to cross without damage. Used in residential subdivisions, parking lot perimeters, and median noses where driveway access is required without separate curb cuts.

Caltrans Type B

Curb & Gutter

Integrated curb and concrete gutter pan, the standard requirement for public street work in LA County. Channels surface runoff to storm drains while defining the clear roadway width. Built per LA County DPW Standard Plans.

LA County DPW Std.

Valley Gutter

Low-profile concrete channel crossing a roadway to allow surface drainage to pass through an intersection or driveway approach. Used where pipe drainage is impractical and controlled sheet flow is acceptable per drainage design.

Cross-Drainage

ADA Curb Ramps

Accessible ramp construction per Caltrans Standard Plan RSP A88A and California Title 24. Includes correct slope (max 8.33%), truncated dome tactile warning surface, 4-foot landing at base, and flush transition to crosswalk.

Standards & Compliance

Built to LA County & Caltrans Spec

Concrete curb and gutter on public agency projects is subject to inspection by LA County DPW or Caltrans. We build to their standard plans the first time, not corrected after a rejection.

  • Caltrans Standard Plans, curb face heights, gutter widths, and joint spacing per current standard plan series
  • LA County DPW Standard Plans, local requirements for residential and commercial frontages throughout unincorporated areas and contract cities
  • Concrete mix design, Class 560-C-3250 or project-specified design strength with correct water-cement ratio
  • Reinforcement, #4 rebar at required spacing for curb return corners and high-load applications
  • Expansion and contraction joints, placed at correct intervals to prevent random cracking
  • Curing, membrane-applied curing compound or wet cure per specification to achieve design strength
  • ADA ramp truncated domes, pre-formed panels or cast-in-place per CA Division of the State Architect detail
License Classifications

QGP holds B (General Building) and C-36 (Plumbing) classifications in addition to our core A and C-21 licenses. The B license covers concrete formwork and placement for curb and gutter. C-36 applies to concrete work connected to drainage and utility structures. Together they qualify us for virtually any curb, gutter, or drainage concrete scope, commercial, industrial, or public agency.

License No. 643034, B & C-36
DIR registered for prevailing wage public works projects
Questions

Curb & Gutter FAQ

A standard curb is a vertical or sloped concrete barrier at the edge of pavement that defines the roadway boundary. Curb-and-gutter adds a concrete flow channel (gutter pan) at the base of the curb to collect and channel surface runoff toward storm drains. Most LA County public street work requires curb-and-gutter rather than curb alone, it's a drainage requirement, not just aesthetic.
For public street work in LA County, yes. Caltrans Standard Plans and LA County DPW Standard Plans specify dimensions, concrete mix design, reinforcement, joint spacing, and curing requirements. QGP holds the B and C-36 license classifications required for this work, and we build to spec on every public agency and private commercial curb job.
Yes. ADA-compliant curb ramps are a standard scope for us. We install per Caltrans Standard Plan RSP A88A and California Title 24 requirements, correct slope (maximum 8.33%), truncated dome tactile warning surface, minimum 4-foot landing at the base, and flush transition to the crosswalk or accessible path of travel.
Concrete reaches sufficient strength for light pedestrian traffic in 24–48 hours under normal LA weather conditions. Vehicle loading is typically cleared at 7 days when design strength is achieved. Public works contracts follow the curing schedule specified in the project documents. We provide written guidance on when the curb is ready for traffic.
